Meet our key note speakers!

Oksana Arion

is an associate professor at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in Ukraine. She works in the Geography of Ukraine Department. She received her PhD in 2000 in constructive geography and rational use of natural resources. Her thesis topic was “Optimizing landscape and ecological analysis of protected areas on the example of the Kachanivka State Park, a monument of horticultural art.” Her fields of interest include tourism resource studies; tourist and recreational potential of the territories; organization of tourist and recreational activities within protected areas; protected geographical indications (PGI) and gastronomic tourism. She is also a member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the "Holosiivskyi" National Nature Park in Ukraine.

Alona Varukha

is currently a researcher at the Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv and also at the science department of the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve. She received her master’s degree in geography of tourism and recreation from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in 2016 and currently works on her PhD thesis about the management of protected areas in Ukraine. Her fields of interest include conservation, protected area planning and management, its effectiveness; tourism and recreation in protected areas and the planning and management of conservation projects. She is a German Federal Environmental Foundation Fellowship alumna and a current participant in the Klaus Töpfer Fellowship Programme (2023-2025 cohort).

Peter Südbeck

is the current director of the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park, Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site. He has been in that position since 2005. Since 2018, he has also served as the president of Nationale Naturlandschaften e.V. (National Natural Landscapes, NNL), Germany’s umbrella organization for national parks and biosphere reserves – and also the German section of the Europarc Federation. He also works within the trilateral Wadden Sea Secretariate context with Danish and Dutch partners; in addition, the park retains partnerships e.g. in West Africa along the African-Eurasian flyway. He is one of Germany’s notable and outstanding ornithologists and has worked in several positions in this field prior before starting his tenure in the Wadden Sea. He is one of the leading experts of the German Red List for birds.
